Happy New Year!! I hope that you all had a super fabulous holiday season. The compliance/practice week for January will be 1/16 thru 1/20. To those speech and language monthly home program participants: keep up the excellent work as you are being rewarded with superior speech and language progress! Here are some additional tips to keep in mind when working on your home programs:
ARTICULATION: Keep in mind that you may need to modify the activity to challenge your child or to help them to be successful with their sounds. If your child struggles with the word, review the sound in isolation first and/or have your child repeat the word after you say it. If your child is breezing thru at the word level, then have them say a few words in a row and/or put the word in a phrase or a sentence.
LANGUAGE: Remember to talk about everyday things with your child to help build their vocabulary skills, i.e. when you are driving-traffic signal, intersection, over pass. When they use an incorrect verb form or pronoun in a sentence, model the correct form and repeat their sentence. Try to ask questions that require more than a yes/no response. Give up the gaming systems for a night and play a good old fashioned board game. Go for a walk in the snow (when we get some), build a snowman, make snow angels, shovel and talk, talk, talk about what you are doing as well as ask "who", "what", "where", "when" and "how" questions. You can even throw in a "why" question for an extra challenge.
